Data types and metrics

The INFRA-ART Spectral Database contains at this moment over 1000 XRF, ATR-FTIR, and Raman spectra linked to over 500 known reference materials specifically used by artists - from natural mineral pigments used since prehistoric times, to modern synthetic organic pigments and dyes introduced starting with the 20th century. Multiple records of the same type of material are available for situations where we had access to reference materials from different manufacturers, or for situations where we had access to reference materials with different crystal structures (e.g. powder, grains).

The database contains data of the following groups of materials:

Natural minerals and inorganic pigments

  • Mineral pigments
  • Earth pigments
  • Inorganic pigments, synthetic
  • Carbon-based pigments

Organic dyes and pigments

  • Natural organic dyes and pigments
  • Organic pigments, synthetic
  • Synthetic dyes

Organic binding media and varnishes

  • Glues, gums and binders
  • Resins, balsams and wax

Mixtures

  • Mixed pigments
  • Artist color paints
  • Other mixtures

Miscellaneous

  • Metal powder
  • Unclassified materials

To facilitate the search of the end user, the samples have been grouped into 14 different classes of materials. The distribution of the samples in the database can be found below.
